Popular Holistic Medicine Treatments
Holistic medicine seeks to treat the entire person, including the physical, emotional and spiritual needs the person has. The goal is to achieve a proper life balance to improve all areas of health. There are numerous treatment options holistic medicine practitioners offer, tailoring treatment plans specifically for each individual patient.
Common types of holistic medicine
Although every patient is unique, there are popular holistic medicine treatments that are more common. The most common types of treatments include naturopathy, acupuncture, acupressure, Ayurveda, biofeedback and homeopathy. The following is a review of each treatment that includes insights into the potential benefits they offer.
Naturopathy, also called naturopathic medicine, is a form of holistic medicine that focuses on nature’s healing power. Naturopathy typically utilizes a range of treatment forms. For example, it may combine conventional medicine with herbal remedies, lifestyle changes and dietary changes. It embodies the same ideas as holistic medicine, seeking to treat the whole person (physical, mental and spiritual). Naturopathic practitioners believe the body has natural healing powers, and they try and maximize the body (along with remedies found in nature) to help the body heal.
What was once considered by many to be an unproven alternative method is now becoming more mainstream. Some studies are showing a positive correlation between acupuncture and pain relief, which is why acupuncture is a common practice in holistic medicine. Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief; many report it relieves tension headaches, migraines, osteoarthritis, insomnia and PMS. Acupuncture involves stimulating pressure points of the body with needles. Acupressure, which involves hands, elbows, etc., instead of needles, is common in holistic medicine as well.
Ayurveda, also called ayurvedic medicine, originated in India thousands of years ago. It is a form of holistic medicine that uses herbal medicine, therapies, lifestyle changes and nutrition to balance the body in an effort to achieve better health. Ayurveda differs from acupuncture in that it places more of a focus on mental health; many utilize ayurvedic medicine to deal with depression, anxiety and sleep complications. Common techniques involved in Ayurveda include herbal medicines, yoga and dietary changes.
Aromatherapy is an intriguing type of holistic medicine that uses the inhalation of essential oils to treat health concerns. The aroma is often inhaled through a diffuser. The purpose of aromatherapy varies. Many use it to deal with physical symptoms, such as pain, inflammation and nausea. Many others use it for mental health benefits, such as anxiety relief, depression relief and a better night of sleep. Though many studies are ongoing, some have reported that it helps patients feel calmer.
